Summer in Finland

Summer in Finland is a season like no other—an enchanting stretch of white nights where the sun barely sets and time seems to slow down. The air is fresh and filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers, and the landscape transforms into a lush, vibrant wonderland. Days are spent swimming in crystal-clear lakes, walking barefoot through blooming meadows, and exploring the peaceful countryside where nature is never far away. It’s a time of simple pleasures: catching fresh fish from the lake, gathering wild herbs and flowers, and celebrating crayfish season with long outdoor dinners under the glowing twilight sky. In this magical northern summer, beauty feels effortless, and life moves with a gentle, grounding rhythm.

We always spend some time in Hanko during the summer, as this city comes alive during summer time. I love the white sandy beaches and the coastal feeling this town brings. Both Porvoo and Fiskars are also great places to visit from Helsinki as they are located close by. Hanko, the southernmost town in Finland, is a beloved summer retreat where the sea meets sun-drenched charm. Known for its long sandy beaches, graceful 19th-century wooden villas, and laid-back coastal atmosphere, Hanko comes alive in the summer months with a unique blend of history, nature, and seaside elegance. Surrounded by over 130 kilometers of coastline and dotted with rocky islets, it’s a haven for swimming, sailing, and leisurely bike rides along pine-scented paths. The town’s vibrant harbor fills with boats and cafés, where visitors gather for fresh seafood, cool drinks, and the salty breeze. Whether you're wandering through flower-lined streets, watching the sunset from a granite shore, or enjoying the buzz of summer events, Hanko offers a perfect slice of Finnish summer by the sea.

Summer is all about swimming in lakes, just like last summer, this one has been lovely and warm so we often find ourselves spendind time swimming in Kirkkonummi, where there are many lakes to enjoy. Helsinki is also lovely for sea swimming, there are plenty of beaches and cliffs to go swim from like Uunisaari. Helsinki is also wonderful for visiting different islands with ferries that commonly leave from the market square. Ive been buying fresh berries on repeat from the marketsquare as they are so sweet and packed with vitamins during the summer time.

Fagervik is a hidden gem on the southern coast of Finland, steeped in charm and quiet history. This former ironworks village, dating back to the 17th century, is nestled in a lush, green valley surrounded by forests and lakes. Its beautifully preserved red wooden buildings, peaceful gardens, and the elegant Fagervik Manor create a timeless atmosphere that feels almost untouched by modern life. A walk through the village is like stepping into a postcard—tranquil, picturesque, and deeply connected to Finland’s industrial past. Whether you're exploring the historic church, enjoying a picnic by the lake, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings, Fagervik is a perfect stop for those seeking beauty and calm off the beaten path.

Naturally we spend some time at our own countryside that is in Punkaharju. There are lots of wonderful places to see if you are in this side of Finland. On the way to Punkaharju, we stopped at Kenkävero & Tertinkartano for lunch that is in MIkkeli.

Kenkävero & Tertinkartano (Mikkeli)

In Mikkeli, a visit to Kenkävero is a charming step into Finland’s rural heritage—this beautifully restored vicarage by the lake is known for its lush gardens, artisan boutiques, and cozy café serving traditional Finnish treats. Just a short drive away, Tertin Kartano offers an elegant lunch stop in a historic manor setting, where the food is crafted from local ingredients—many grown right on the estate. Surrounded by blooming gardens and serene countryside, it’s a perfect place to pause and enjoy the flavors and beauty of the region.

Punkaharju (Savonlinna)

Punkaharju, near Savonlinna, is one of Finland’s most iconic and picturesque landscapes—a narrow, forested ridge stretching between two sparkling lakes, formed by the Ice Age and celebrated for centuries for its breathtaking natural beauty. Surrounded by clear waters and ancient pines, this national landscape is perfect for peaceful walks, scenic bike rides, or rowing along the tranquil shoreline. The views from the ridge road are unforgettable, especially in the soft light of summer evenings. Punkaharju offers a serene escape into nature, deeply rooted in Finnish cultural and natural heritage. Visit hotelli Punkaharju and Ravintola Muotikuu for a cute lunch spot.
