Borgo della Marmotta Farm Resort, Umbria
From Gaeta, we drove to Umbria for the rest of our holiday. Umbria feels like home to us—we’ve been coming here almost every year for the past sixteen years. I love everything about it: the atmosphere, the food, the charming little towns, and the lush, green landscapes that make it so special.
This time, we stayed at the wonderful Borgo della Marmotta Farm Resort, which I can highly recommend. What makes this hotel particularly special is its layout—it’s divided into two main areas: the main hotel with suites and rooms, and a set of independent houses (Villa della Genga) equipped with terraces and kitchens, located near another pool area. This setup is perfect if you’re planning a longer stay, as you can enjoy the flexibility of cooking for yourself or taking advantage of the hotel’s excellent amenities whenever you wish.
We had originally booked one of the houses, but at the last minute decided to switch to a suite in the main hotel, since we planned to dine at the restaurant every evening. It turned out to be a great decision, as the room was lovely and being closer to the restaurant made things much more convenient. If you stay in one of the houses, keep in mind that they’re about a five-minute drive from the main property—it’s not advisable to walk after dark due to wild boars in the area, so driving is the safer option.
We absolutely loved the breakfast and dinner at the hotel, and the overall atmosphere was warm and relaxing. The location, near Spoleto, is ideal for exploring the region—beautiful towns such as Spello, Assisi, and Montefalco are all within easy reach. The area is also known for its excellent olive oil. One of my favorite producers is Marfuga, located in Campello sul Clitunno, which sells exceptional oils and natural cosmetic products. We enjoyed re-visiting their shop and stocking up on a few of our favourites.
The hotel also offers truffle hunting experiences, which sounded fascinating, although the season had only just begun during our stay—something to look forward to at some point.

Places to Visit from the hotel
Nestled in the heart of Umbria, the towns of Spello, Montefalco, and Assisi perfectly capture the region’s timeless charm. Each has its own distinct character—Spello enchants with its flower-filled alleys and honey-colored stone houses; Montefalco, known as the “Balcony of Umbria,” offers sweeping views and renowned wines and food; and Assisi, spiritual and serene, invites visitors to walk in the footsteps of Saint Francis. Together, they showcase the very best of Umbrian beauty, history, and tradition.
